Settgast acquired a 220-pound, 2.5-inch thick, poster-sized piece of the meteorite in 2004. The Bonhams auction house, describing the meteorite for a 2008 sale, wrote: “Its rarity, size and quality combine to make this piece one of the most valuable meteorite specimens in history.” The meteorite, which consists of iron and the greenish mineral olivine, is noted for the beauty of its translucent crystals. The space rock - dubbed the “Fukang meteorite” after the remote city in western China where it was found in 2000 - is the focus of federal court litigation involving Novato resident Stephen Settgast. ![]() Now, more than 4 billion years later, the reverberations are being felt from Marin County to New England.
